As my experience last week, I found my web rank and traffic decrease dramatically because I didn’t maintain the web site. I was busy my new blog so forgot about the older website.
After I checked and investigated, I found that title for each articles in my website are gone!!… I lost my article’s title accidentally! I put the code in the title and somehow it disappeared without I realized it. That’s made my rank and traffic decrease dramatically because one of the important parts of SEO – titles of content were gone.

Some practical maintenance action that we need to do regularly:
1. You need to visit your own website at least once a week. It will make sure that your web site can be accessed smoothly and your SEO aspects are still in place.
2. Don’t ignore your old website if you still hope traffic from there.
3. Regularly check your cpanel and you can find a menu which is sometimes having different names such as webstat or awstat or webalizer etc. You can check what keywords mostly used by visitors come to your site, How the visitor find out our site from search engine etc.
4. Use free tools such as: Free monitor for Google from CleverStat.com to check the page rank based on the certain keywords
5. Check feed link, sometimes the link of our feed also broken because some script, you can read my previous article about it.
6. Check broken link, you can use the free tool in www.dead-links.com

With those simple actions above, you can make sure that the traffic still comes to your site.
 

Human can read text and interpret picture, color etc While Robot only can read text or source code.

There are some guidance to make a good content :

1. Original content and useful are loved by search engines and human.
2. Only 250 – 500 words, you can use Microsoft word  tools - Word count
3. the targeted keywords are spread out along the content and the amount is about 3% – 8% from total words
4. Make anchor text (link it the text format) such as : Learn more about Allergy here. And also make links between pages
5. Content should be updated and add in the regular time
6. Title of content should be with <h1> …………… </h1>
7. Title contains the targeted keywords.
8. Main title should be in the top position of the page
9. Sub Title should be with <h2> ……………… </h2>
10. First keyword that appears in the content should be BOLD or Italic or Underline.
11. we can put Alt-Tag for the pictures in our content, this is very helpful for search engine robot to recognize the picture (robot only understand text)
12. We have to put the title in the place that the robot can easily find.

Some important things in Meta Tags :

1. You can put the good keywords as you make survey in my previous posts in this Meta name = “Keyword”.
2. for Meta tags “Title” and “Description”, it should be a sentences with content the keywords.
3. In Meta Tags “Title”, it would be good if we can put ” | ”  rather than ” , “   , because it can save the space and it easier to read for robot or human.

In this section, we will learn about Search Engine Optimization (SEO). SEO is a method for optimizing our site for getting FREE TRAFFIC and targeted from Search Engine. Other expert has said, Search Engine Optimization is the process that is meant to convert site visitors into online customers.

One of the most important in SEO is KEYWORDS where 80% new visitor visit our website through Search engine by typing keywords.

But you have to remember the goal of SEO is not listed for all keywords and keywords phrases you can think of, but more important you should try to achieve higher rankings only on the most targeted keywords. 

And another facts that mentioned by Riyeke : 95% search engine users don’t want look to the second pages of the queries.

50% visitor will go back to your website, when they can still find our website in the top position of Search Engine.

Now, the next question is what search engine should we take attention more ? the answer is Google. Why? Because according Net Ratings For Search Engine watch.com, Google is the first rank in all search engine with 46.3%, where Yahoo 23.4%, MSN 11.4%, and the rest divided by several small search engines.

2. Off-Page Optimization

On-Page Optimization is comprise of :

1. Keywords
2. Meta Tags
3. Content

Now, its Time to talk more detail about KEYWORDS.

Statistical Research has shown that most people are now searching for 2 or 3 word phrases rather than for single word :

              - 2 word phrases = 33%

              – 3 word phrases = 26%

              - 1 word phrases = 19%

              - 4 word phrases = 13 %

              – 5 word phrases = 6 %

              - Other = the rest

Single word keywords won’t get you TARGETTED traffic, for example : single word keywords of  “Tourism” or “traveling”. If someone will go to Japan for holiday, will they search in search engine with word “tourism”? I don’t thing so, because if they search it with “tourism” it will give them hundreds million of query results.
Most of them will search with keywords “tourism in Japan” rather than just “tourism”.

For survey the good keywords you can use the free tools like Adwords Clever Wizard ( free edition) or from Overture.

Now we will make a practice to find a good keywords, we will investigate how to finding out the keywords for which you should optimize your site for the search engines. I took sample of a web site for Baby stuffs.

Better Keywords if :

1. Results < 5,000,000 , if more than 15,000,000 it will be Hyper-competitive
2. Good KEI = 100 - 200
   Excellent KEI > 400
   Over valuated (cannot use) > 10,000
3. Good Ratio < 150
4. Ad Efficiency higher is better.

Result :

1. The keyword of “Baby” (one phrases) will be hyper-competitive because the Results of Google search with keyword “Baby” gives 514,000,000 !!!- forget it !.
2. Two phrases “Baby Shower” gives good result : its KEI is very high, this means that this phrase is a popular one and it spite of a large number of searches can bring to your site a significant amount of visitors. Its Ad Efficiency value is also good, which means that it is worth to advertise for this keyword.
3. If you move to Three phrases “Baby Shower Gift” gives good result as well. It has less competitive
4. OR, you can try  another keyword with don,t use word “Baby” such as “Diaper Bag”, it has better result than keyword “Baby Shower”.
